Join the Young People’s Project (YPP), the Cambridge STEAM Initiative, and Cambridge Public Schools for our Math Playground event and annual Cambridge Flagway Tournament on May 3rd - an exciting day of family fun that builds math literacy for all ages! The day will include a range of activities that showcase the joy, fun, and wonder in math experiences for families and young people.

    Math Playground

    10am – 1pm

    • Explore this dynamic arena filled with engaging math games. Activities draw on YPP’s catalog of games and activities developed by youth and teen math literacy workers and mathematicians to make higher-level math concepts accessible to elementary students.
    • Playgrounds are organized by four “lands”: Number Discovery, Flagway, Algebra, and Fractions/Ratio.  Each of the lands reflect YPP's pedagogical approach of using games, activities, and a focus on multiple representations to develop conceptual understanding and build fluency with mathematical concepts.
    • Join the CPS Math Department in a variety of games and activities from CPS math curriculum so families can expand elementary school math engagement beyond the classroom!

The goal of this math event is to bring the Cambridge community together to create a space where children own their instructional landscape and have control over teaching and learning approaches. We hope to spark change in the community’s approach to math and create more on-ramps to math literacy for all children.

    Lunch

    12 - 1pm

Enjoy a free lunch provided by the event sponsors. (Open to all ages.)

    2025 Cambridge Flagway Tournament

    1 - 3pm

YPP’s Flagway™ game was designed to create environments where students in 5th – 8th grade can practice and celebrate learning math. During game play, students navigate a "Flagway," or course of radial “paths” based on the Flagway rules (derived from the “Mobius” Function). As students develop into skilled players, several may be running through the course simultaneously, creating dynamics similar to that of a sporting event.

Come join us to cheer on our Cambridge Public School students who have been practicing Flagway all year in YPP Programs at PAUS, VSUS, and CSUS. They will compete with each other in the local Flagway Tournament before all teams compete with teams across the country in San Francisco at the end of May. This is a send off event!

    Registration recommended. Register Below.
