25 Years of YPP: Celebrate Our Past, Value Our Future

The Young People's Project had an amazing time celebrating 25 Years of YPP.  It was a full circle moment to be able to celebrate the Math Literacy Work young people have been doing in their communities, as well as highlighting the work of The Algebra Project and Math Talk.  Each represents threads in the quilt of community, mathematics, and access to high quality and highly engaging educational experiences in math.

This year we introduced the concept of Fundi Awards. The word Fundi is Swahili or Shona that means to teach or to learn.  It comes from the words kufunda(to learn), kufundiswa(to be taught).  Here are the Fundi Award Recipients.  If you're listed below, and you didn't get your plaque at the gala, please update your profile with a mailing address so we can send it to you.

The Young People’s Project builds communities that count through math literacy and social change. YPP changes the way young people view themselves in their classrooms and communities. Through our unique model of near-peer learning, we position ourselves to train high school students as Math Literacy Workers (MLWs), who improve academic outcomes for themselves and the elementary and middle school students they work with. These MLWs actively work to remove institutional and systemic barriers to their own individual success and the collective success of their peers. This work has been ongoing for the past 25 years and it is our hope it will continue to benefit the communities YPP serves for the next 25!
