Original Invitation letter:

Dear Flagway™ Community,

The Young People’s Project, along with Ohio State University, is pleased to invite you to the 4th Annual National Flagway™ Tournament, which will take place on May 16, 2020 from 10am-4pm, in Mansfield, OH. at the Campus Recreation Center.

The tournament will bring together middle school players, high school coaches, parents, teachers, university partners, and community members to celebrate, encourage, and motivate mathematical learning and to relate to Flagway™ as a sport.

More specifically, The Flagway™ games combine speed, athleticism, and precision, with mastery of mathematics. Flagway™ has the same elements that most sports have:  running, scoring points, teamwork, coaching, training, competition, collaboration, and fun. Because of this, people of all ages are naturally attracted to the game. To be good at Flagway™ however also requires mastery of mathematics.  We envision that Flagway™ will target students who typically are not recognized for mathematical achievement and will provide a vehicle for them to shine in this arena.

We applaud all of the teams that are preparing for this year’s event!

At the 4th Annual National Flagway™ Tournament students will be offered opportunities to:

❖ Co-facilitate an instructional workshop the morning of the tournament for conference attendees on the rules and benefits of the Flagway™ Game;

❖ Compete in a round robin Flagway™ Game Math Tournament with other YPP players from across the country, with parents and community members cheering them on!

An important aim of this national gathering is to organize around larger local competitions and community involvement and to engage students, parents, and the community in celebrating their children for doing math in the same way that they celebrate and organize around their children to do football, basketball, baseball, and soccer.

We very much look forward to seeing you this May in Mansfield, OH.!
