Rosalyn Pendleton

My name is Rosalyn Pendleton. I am a community organizer and math literacy trainer with Y.P.P.

We are a youth led organization that uses Math Literacy as a tool to develop young leaders and organizers who radically change the quality of education and life in their communities so that all children have the opportunity to reach their full human potential.

Throughout the last seven years I have gotten a lot of "brothering" and "sistering" from YPP leaders such as Maisha Moses, Albert Sykes, Cameo Kelly, Demetrica Gordon, Kevin Edmonson, and First Cohort members, "mothering" from Dr. Gayonr, aunting from Ms. Quinn and unconditional love and "fathering" from Dr. Moses. Being in YPP has shown me what a strong family should look like and the strength that it can give someone. It has also made me a leader in my community and my life.

The best part of the work that I love is getting involved in my classroom, for instance staying on college campuses such as Mississippi State and FIU, and participating in the discussions around The Quality Education As A Constitutional Right.

The Young People's Project is much more than math and finding the right answers; it has taught me that the questions you asked were just a important as the answers you gave, in the classroom and in life.

The young people in Y.P.P. continues to change lives, better ourselves, our educational system, and promote social justice.

I am so humble and appreciative to have gotten this experience. It has helped me grow as a person and I now know what needs to be done in certain types of situations and how to approach certain types of situations.

These kids have challenged me to make a difference in the world and I now know it's through education. Dr. Moses told us something this summer that really stuck with me and I think that these kids are a good example or proof of it. “Education is like happiness. You have to pursue it.”
