The most rewarding part of his role at YPP is opening up the minds of the youth. Khalid uses math modules to mentor his students. It requires them to think critically about a subject they are timid about and encourages them to develop team work and social skills they are not already familiar with in school.
The Liberty City Elementary fifth grader is adding skills at a free math and law camp at Florida International University. That’s where college and high school students come together to help 20 third, fourth, and fifth graders brush up on addition, subtraction, and even get some legal education.
Every day on HuffPost, we're highlighting one 'Greatest Person'- an exceptional individual who is confronting the country's economic and political crises with creativity, generosity, and passion. Omo Moses has activism in his blood: both his parents were both civil rights leaders in the South during the 1960s. His full name is actually Omowale, which is the same name the people of Nigeria gave to Malcolm X when he visted there. The MacArthur Foundation gave Moses' father a "Genius Award" for founding the Algebra Project, an initiative that prepares poor and minority students for college by teaching them important mathematical skills. Omo carries on his father's tradition of excellence today with the Young People's Project. Five hundred high school and college students a year are trained and employed by the YPP to teach math to 5,000 students all over the country. It aims to turn underprivileged kids into "learners, teachers, leaders, and organizers through math and media literacy, community-building, and advocacy." Omo's story and work inspired us to feature him as today's 'Greatest Person.'
The Young People’s Project Inc. in Michigan recently held its first League Day Math Tournament at Willow Run Middle School. More than 40 students in grades five through 12 joined together June 5 at Willow Run Middle School to compete in what is called the Flagway Game, in which players categorize numbers.
We love the work the Young People’s Project (YPP) is doing! The group creates opportunities for young people to learn, teach, lead, and organize. One exciting project they are involved in is “Quality Education as a Constitutional Right” (QECR), which seeks to raise educational standards for American schoolchildren.
