TYPP@75 - History, Culture, Connection

YPP, The Hot 8 Band, Black Men of Labor and The Urban Bush Women joined in creative collaboration at TYPP@75 in East Hampton in late August 2009. For the second year, Artist/Philanthropist Toni Ross and Kathy Engel hosted the event to generate financial support and awareness for ongoing YPP projects, specifically in New Orleans and the gulf region. The "East End Tour" also included a series of community engagement events, including a music education series at the Hayground School (hyperlink) and Bridghampton Childcare and Recreational Center, closing with an enriching Education Conversation led by Bob and Omo Moses. Through Finding Our Folk, YPP has leveraged the cultural legacy of New Orleans Brass Band Culture towards learning initiatives with the support of the Hot 8 Brass Band and the Black Men of Labor. Bob Moses, Albert Sykes (Lead Organizer, YPP MSS), Fred Johnson (Founder, YPP) and Bennie Peete (Hot 8 Brass Band) presented the history, legacy and connection in young people leading the civil rights, education and cultural movements and in framing the future for the YPP leaders. The evening included a landmark by the Hot 8 Brass Band, BMOL and UBW.
