The Mississippi House Party: A Huge Success

This past week, YPP Mississippi held its first ever house party, hosted at the home of Dr. Geraldine Brookins.

There were two important factors that motivated us to organize the event:

1. To showcase the work of our students

2. To raise money and awareness for the work of YPP Jackson.

Several influential individuals within the community were present, such as a City Councilman, a judge as well as many funders and key collaborators. We sought to bring people together to learn more about YPP and what the organization does for communities in Mississippi. For the most part, the House Party was an informational event that allowed newcomers to gain a working understanding of YPP and its mission. Another goal that was met via the party was that the students and staff of YPP Mississippi were able to go through the process of setting up and successfully implementing an event. Through the event, we were able to promote YPP’s mission by allowing the students to reach their full human potential, which they did by connecting with participants and drawing them into the work and the spirit of the program.

Many students got up and told their stories of struggle and triumph and detailed what brought them to the organization. One student in particular, Antoine Gonzalez, told a painful story of personal tragedy and loss. Many people present had tears in their eyes after listening to Gonzalez speak. It was a very moving and memorable part of the event and it left participants touched and inspired.
