History:
Summer 2007
The Michigan Young People's Project (YPP) program is a part of a larger Mathematics Literacy Project in South Eastern Michigan, centered in Washtenaw County. The specific YPP work expanded after 5 University of Michigan students attended the YPP Summer 2007 College Math Literacy Worker (CMLW) Training in Chicago, with support from the University of Michigan's (UM) College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) and School of Education. The respective Dean’s of each of the colleges had met Dr. Bob Moses of the Algebra Project at an event before the training, and felt inspired to support the 5 students. Throughout the remainder of the summer and the fall of 2007, the five worked with advisers and colleagues in the LSA, Education, the Residential College, and Project Community to model YPP for the Mathematics Literacy Project and began solidifying community connections.
Fall 2007-Summer 2008
The UM Office of the Provost and LSA began to fund the work of the CMLWs in August 2007 and as of January 2008, CMLWs were training MLWs at Cesar Chavez Academy High School in Southwest Detroit, working with a group of students in Ypsilanti through Eastern Michigan University's (EMU) GEAR UP, and facilitating an occasional workshop at Second Baptist Church in Ann Arbor, as a part of the church's Academic Achievement Program. UM and EMU sent 3 students to YPP Chicago's Summer CMLW training in 2008. In the Summer of 2008 YPP-Michigan worked with the Summer Camps at Ann Arbor Community Center, EMU GEAR UP, and Second Baptist Church of Ypsilanti.
