YPP Miami
In Miami, The Young People’s Project began programming in Fall 2007 in collaboration with The Center for Urban Education & Innovation at Florida International University (FIU). Together the YPP and FIU are dedicated to the work of schools and communities in pursuit of academic excellence, social justice and equity. We are committed to: 1) Assisting schools in providing an excellent education for those children who are typically underserved, especially urban children living in poverty; 2) Developing initiatives to promote research and creative activities that address critical issues of power and privilege in schools and communities, both locally and nationally.
As part of the effort to blend math into the culture of students, YPP-Miami will support a district-wide Flagway League of several teams affiliated with schools, churches and community organizations. Teams will be comprised of up to 8 members and will be initially organized according to grade level, primarily 3rd-4th and 5th-6th. College and high school students will be trained as “Coaches.” The season will be scheduled over 10-week blocks during the fall and spring of the school year, including time for practice and games to qualify for tournament at the end. Through Flagway leagues and tournaments, students will practice and celebrate learning mathematics while parents and family members support their child’s participation in the same way that they celebrate their children learning how to play basketball, soccer and other sports.
