YPP@HC is a student-led program that trains Hamilton College students, referred to as College Math Literacy Workers (CMLWs), to develop and facilitate math literacy and social justice workshops to students in the Advantage After-School Program at Donovan Middle School in Utica, NY. This academic year-long program requires the Hamilton students to commit to attending weekly training sessions, facilitating at least one hour-long workshop a week, and organizing a Math Tournament at the end of each semester.
The program was initially founded by Hector Acevedo in Fall of 2007 as part of a senior project. Hector worked with 5 college students to teach workshops focused around civil rights to students in the Study Buddies program at Hamilton College. In Fall 2009, the YPP@HC was revived by Leide Cabral with help from Denise Ghartey and Hannah Roth. Having worked in a local Utica middle school during her sophomore year, Leide was convinced that having the college students work directly within the struggling community would be more beneficial. After developing a partnership with the Advantage After-School Program at Donovan Middle School, run by Safe Schools NY, YPP@HC CMLWs were allowed to teach workshops directly in Utica.
During the Fall 2009 semester, Leide, Denise and Hannah launched YPP@HC and worked on redeveloping a model for the program. They increased the number of college students involved and worked closely with Hector to increase the programs impact on the middle school students by focusing on workshop consistency, mentorship, and sustainability.
