Welcome, karibu, and akwaba peeps!
Now begins the 2008 installation of the YPP TOT (Training of Trainers) Summer Institute, here at Historic Banning Mills in Whitesburg, GA.
It is interesting I used the term “summer” here because you might not have been able to tell it was summer based on the level of rain that was pouring down as we made our entrance to the training facility. Our first day however, served as a wonderful metaphor for what I ponder will be our opinion of the session as a whole by next week’s end. Even with the ominous image of rain surrounding us on all sides, it was nothing but bright, sunlight-shining optimism within the walls of our gathering place.
Following our afternoon arrivals, unpacking, and an amazing introduction to our training location (the food in particular), we got right to work, getting into addressing the nature of our work and the expectations for the next couple of weeks, forming and adopting our schedule.
Our first discussion as a group ranged from ensuring that we kept an open mind and respected each other, to realizing that issues we may be facing at our sites are far from being unique to our locations; that the insight and knowledge we can gain from each other during our time here can prove invaluable.
As I conclude this entry, I have to point out that at face value, the workshop schedule does look pretty imposing. With two to three sessions of work each day, things may prove as difficult for us as they were when we tried (to no avail) to lower a stick to the ground using only our fingertips (see picture). If the solution to our “sticky” situation plays as true as my theory behind our eventual success then rest assured, as a unit, together we’ll be accomplishing some big things by August 22nd.
So without further adieu… LET’S START THE SHOW!
