YPP began working in Cambridge as a program within the Algebra Project Youth Initiatives in 1996. Our role and responsibility was to organize students to take ownership of their mathematics education with the hopes of developing a culture among young people about learning and sharing mathematics. YPP and the concept of a Math Literacy Worker grew out of this work. As we have grown, we have grappled with how to develop programmatically and structurally, such that young people remain central to all parts of the organization. This development has been an evolutionary process, as elementary students graduated to middle school, and 6th and 7th graders became high school students, and high school students moved on to college. Through these various transitions we have sought to create spaces such that young people can continually take on greater responsibility within individual workshops, programs, and the organization. In Fall of 2005 YPP opened its programming in the Boston community. Since then the program has opened a program office in the Fields Corner in the Dorchester neighborhood. The program works with High School Math Literacy Workers from all over the city.
Through our established and new partnerships with school and community-based organizations, we plan to continue to facilitate math literacy workshops and activities for young people in an effort to develop a city-wide culture around math. We seek to increase the number of Boston Public Schools high school students that can serve as MLWs. This effort is based on the YPP’s belief that the demand for math literacy has to come from the students within the public school system. High school math literacy workers can be the catalysts for this demand. 
YPP GB also seeks to increase the number of students in the communities it serves that successfully undertake and pass Algebra in the 8th or 9th grade year and subsequently develop the foundation to successfully undertake advanced math courses, including Calculus. We will develop Flagway Leagues and Tournaments through our local outreach sites. Through the Flagway games we seek to create an opportunity for students to learn and celebrate learning math, in the same way that they learn and celebrate learning basketball and for parents and community members to support and celebrate students learning math, in the same way that they support and celebrate students mastery of basketball.
